The Putaruru Rugby Football Club was formed on the 15th December 1977 when the two Putaruru teams (Athletic and Marist) amalgamated.

Putaruru is a proud club which continues to foster rugby within the community. The club has created a friendly environment where members can participate in several sports or just socialize using the club facilities.

The clubs goal is to be a club that the entire community will be proud to be associated with. The Club’s vision is to provide a positive outlet for young people, to create a sense of pride in themselves and their town and district. This will mean achieving results both on and off the field.

The senior club fields four teams – A’s, B’s, Under 19’s and Timber Jacks (Golden Oldies). In the early years before professionalism, Putaruru competed strongly in all grades with the Senior A team finishing in the top four on a regular basis in the Waikato competition.  The senior teams compete in the First Division with the aim of again making the Premier Division.

Junior Boys rugby is still strong even though numbers have dropped during the past couple of years. Junior Boy rugby uses club facilities but High School rugby is administered by the school with the club assistance and will continue to assist them in any way we can in the future.

Touch Rugby is very strong in Putaruru. 40 strong teams play on Friday nights during the summer season using the clubs facilities and grounds as well as the adjacent soccer fields.

Putaruru Rugby is in good heart with increased junior and senior player numbers in the 2011 season. In Senior Rugby we have a new coaching and management group for the Senior A team of Jason Barbarich, Ed White and Dan Birks. Doug Petley is the coach for the Senior B Team and Dylan Nathan the coach of the Under 19 team.

Club Facilities

The club grounds cover 3.2 hectares and include two floodlit training fields.

The club house has two levels.  Upstairs there is a well designed and attractively decorated clubrooms in natural timber. Bar and kitchen facilities on this level can comfortably cater for over 300 people Downstairs incorporates the changing rooms, equipment storage and a canteen.

The club is located 5 minutes from the centre of Putaruru and yet is situated a suitable distance from residences to ensure the noise generated from public functions does not disturb residents.
